“ To be native to a place we must learn to speak its language.” - Robin Wall Kimmerer

It has been said that there is a certain energy about this land that brings forth peace and centredness and we certainly felt it the first time we walked onto the property, and purchased it shortly thereafter.

It felt as though our souls were coming home, a sort of heaven on earth if you will. Through the years our friends and guests who came for a visit, would say the same. There is something calming, comforting and mesmerizing about being here, it’s as if you are being wrapped in a warm blanket and nestled before a fire.

From the 250 + year old white oak trees, the stone fences and fieldstone strewn about the property, everything had a message. We’d often say that “ If these stones and trees could talk, oh the stories they would tell ” Well they do tell stories, you just have to learn how to listen. We were so enamoured with all these beautiful stones that lined the property, that we took it upon ourselves to build our home from them. We spent two summers and countless hours collecting each stone by hand, that would inevitably form the foundation and walls of our “ home on the hill” or what some of the locals would call “ the small castle on the hill ” We had the Guest brothers (Frank & Jim ) who were the head masons for Ste. Anne’s Inn and Spa, spearhead the project. We studied masonry techniques prior to hiring them, and the four of us plugged away at the exterior walls, season after season and sometimes right up until the first snows. The two of us later went on to put up stone walls and a fireplace on the interior of the home.

Over a period of 6 years, ( or many millennia if you factor in the stone ) The Stonefield House was formed. It is home and haven to us, and now, a place of repose and wonder where many come to reap the benefits of what this mystical land has to offer.

We look forward to welcoming you,

Paul & Sonia Mastenbroek
